Democracy
“If you only like democracy when it goes your way,
you don’t actually like democracy”.
With an increasingly polarized world, folks are more focused on upholding the ‘values’ of their side instead of being better neighbours — by listening and making an attempt to understand each other.
It is far more important for people to be right and show their might, than be willing to talk and walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.
All of our useful tools (social medias, the internets) are being funneled to build walls instead of building bridges.
We speak a big game of being free, just and equitable — but our actions reek of selfishness, greed and fear of others.
When things don’t break our way, we are quick to be ‘mavericks’ — not realizing that maybe the other majority has some thoughts and ideas that they are expressing. At the very least, we need to make an attempt to hear them out.
Being in a democratic society, that is our responsibility as citizens.
